A dog who faithfully served the country is on the lookout for a new home after living a life of neglect following his retirement.

The 10-year-old shepherd mix named Dondo is one of several dogs who were rescued from K-9 Hero Haven, a shelter in Pennsylvania that finds home for retired working dogs. However, the shelter was accused of abusing its dogs.

K-9 Hero Haven did not immediately respond to McClacthy News’ request for comment Feb. 26.

“When they retired and needed a place to go, K-9 Hero Haven, a rescue organization in Northumberland county, offered them a place to settle and find new forever homes,” the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Philadelphia said in a May 24 Facebook post, back when the dogs were in the process of being rescued and relocated from the location.

“But instead of receiving a blissful retirement, they were faced with the unfathomable,” the SPCA said. “Respected dogs that once sacrificed everything for humankind were now subjected to a life of filth and neglect.”

Animal Law Enforcement stepped and rescued the dogs, one of which was Dondo, according to the SPCA.

After the adoption of one of the long-time residents who was also rescued from the situation, the shelter posted about Dondo, who is still waiting.

“Yesterday we celebrated the adoption of hero dog Ceaser, who had served his country before facing unimaginable trauma,” the shelter said in a Feb. 25 Facebook post. “It was truly a day to memorialize. But, the truth is there are still heroes in our shelter waiting for homes.”

According to Dondo’s pet profile, he’s a goofy pup who adores walks and prefers to keep active with training.

“He can be a bit sensitive from his years in work, so is looking for a peaceful, adult-only home. He is open to meeting other dogs,” his profile says.

Even though he was exposed to cruelty after his life’s work, he still appears to be a puppy at heart.

“This senior dog spent his entire life in the service of others only to be discarded at a ‘rescue’ meant to be his retirement home,” the shelter said.

While Dondo is safe and sound at the SPCA, he deserves a special, comfortable home where he will feel nothing but love during his golden years.

“A shelter is no place for this hero dog. He deserves to be in a home living out his final days in peace and comfort,” the shelter said.

The shelter notes that a great home for him would include an owner who has handled military/law enforcement dogs before.
