A big lottery win couldn’t have come at a better time for a federal worker facing a layoff, Maryland lottery officials said.

The big winner buys lottery tickets while she’s shopping or running errands “as a bit of an amusing diversion” — but has only ever won small amounts such as $5 and $10 prizes, officials said in a Feb. 21 news release.

But this time a Mega Bucks scratch-off ticket bought at Walmart in Hanover won her $100,000, officials said.

“It came at the perfect time,” she said after claiming her prize. “This gives me a lot of peace of mind, and that’s priceless.”

The worker says she’ll “put the money in savings until she needs it or her life situation stabilizes,” officials said.

The game went on sale Nov. 27 with nine top-tier prizes, officials said.

“Another six at the $100,000 level remain unclaimed, along with eight $50,000 prizes and 23 at the $10,000 level,” the lottery said.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
