Nephew teaches uncle to play lottery game — and turns him into big winner in Maryland
An uncle discovered he could learn a thing or two from his nephew, at least when it came to playing the Maryland Lottery.
A Hyattsville man was inspired to try his luck at Racetrax while hanging out with his nephew who is a big fan of the game, officials said in a Jan. 28 news release. His nephew’s tips landed the novice a big win of $61,690 in the unfamiliar game of horse racing and betting.
“I was just hanging out with him,” he told officials. “I’m not a big gambler. He said, ‘Do the wheel.’ He taught me how to play.”
So he placed a $1 Superfecta Wheel bet for a race with the 9, 10, 11 and 1 horses in the game, officials said. He bet the 9, 10 or 11 horse would come in first, second and third place and the 1 horse would place fourth.
“The uncle wasn’t even paying attention when his horses won, galloping across the finish line in 11, 9, 10 and 1 order,” officials said.
It was the local government retiree’s biggest win ever, even topping a $10,000 scratch-off prize he once won, officials said. Scratch-offs are his go-to lottery game.
“I was excited, but I said, ‘It’s nothing but bill money,’” he told officials.
Besides paying bills, he’ll also use some of the money to go golfing and bowling.
Hyattsville is about a 35-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.
