A lucky gambler took home a big jackpot win after playing a slot machine at a California casino, “starting their New Year off well.”

The San Marcos, California, guest was playing a slot machine, Quick Hit Explosion, “just after midnight” during a Jan. 13 trip to Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, Ciara Green, the casino’s communications director, said in a Jan. 22 email to McClatchy News.

The slot machine “is a 30-line game with a 75-credit bet structure,” according to the website Flip The Switch.

With a $4.50 bet and “just the right combination of 30 symbols within the slot’s five reels,” the player hit a progressive jackpot of $497,048.04, Green said.

Pechanga Resort Casino, about a 90-mile drive southeast from Los Angeles, “is one of the largest casino resorts” in the country, according to the resort’s website. The casino features more than 200,000 square feet of gaming space, which includes slots machines, video poker machines and table games.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
