A retiree decided to buy a lottery ticket on a whim and ended up winning thousands in Maryland.

The woman from Sparks bought a $5 Fast Play Sevens ticket in early January, the Maryland Lottery said in a Jan. 21 news release.

She checked her ticket and saw a number 18 with a prize of $57,777, the game’s top prize, lottery officials said.

“I said to myself ‘Holy cow. It didn’t look real,’” she told the lottery office.

The lucky lottery player said she didn’t believe the win was real until she scanned her ticket on the lottery app.

Now, she has plans to use her prize money to pay off bills.

Sparks is about a 25-mile drive north from Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
