A 76-year-old man was killed by a bull while checking to see if his animals’ water source was frozen on his farm, Iowa deputies said.

Family members made the grim discovery the evening of Jan. 19, when they found Mark Hollingsworth unresponsive in the cattle-feeding area, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said in Jan. 20 Facebook post.

It was later learned that Hollingsworth entered the bull pen to check on the water source, and the animal attacked him, knocking him unconscious, according to deputies.

The family called 911, and first responders rushed to the farm and attempted to save his life, deputies said. He was pronounced dead at the farm.

The Madison County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating to see if Hollingsworth experienced a medical episode before he was attacked by the bull, according to the post.

Des Moines is located in Madison County.
