A dog in Indiana who was discovered knocking on death’s door is fighting for her life in an Indiana shelter.

Weighing less than five pounds, the black-shaded pup was dying in the frigid temperatures on a road. She was so close to the brink that the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Fishers feared she wouldn’t live to see the morning after she was rushed in.

“This is Allison. She was found freezing in the snow on Allisonville Road, so emaciated that her fragile body was barely holding on,” the shelter said in a Jan. 14 Facebook post. “At just 4 lbs—less than a third of the weight she should be—Allison was hypothermic, her fur matted into painful tangles, and covered in her own waste. Her body score was a 1, the lowest possible, often a precursor to death.”

Though, despite her tiny, cold body, Allison is proving she’s not going down without a fight.

“When she arrived at the emergency room, no one knew if she’d survive the night. But this morning, against all odds, Allison stood up. She’s fighting. She wants to live,” the shelter said.

The pictures of her posted by the shelter come with a “Viewer discretion is advised” warning since they show Allison’s matted fur and her skinny body. But they also show a face of resilience, one that has experienced animal neglect firsthand.

People in the comment section were saddened — and horrified — by Allison’s story.

“This is absolutely horrible. Poor little girl. I hope she makes a full recovery and gets a home that she deserves with all the love,” one person said.

“Oh sweet girl I pray this all turns around and you have the best life after you recover and heal and you get to see there are some good humans out there,” another commented.

Fishers is about a 20-mile drive northeast from Indianapolis.
