Shelter gets ‘a heartbreaking gift’ — a box of puppies left in the cold. See them now

A bundle of puppies are on the mend after having a very rough start in life, a Philadelphia shelter said.
The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) came to the rescue after receiving a delivery that no one wants to see — especially over the holidays.
“This holiday season, we were given a heartbreaking gift,” the shelter said in a Dec. 20 Facebook post.
“After being found abandoned in a park, nine tiny puppies were brought to our shelter in a box.”
Unfortunately, the extremely young pups were in dire condition.
“At just four weeks old, they had already endured so much,” the shelter continued. “Left in the cold weather to fend for themselves (something they could not do), they were caked in feces, suffering from urine scalding, and in desperate need of care. The world had seemingly turned its back on them, but we couldn’t.”
The shelter went to work treating the puppies that were all named after players on the city’s professional ice hockey team.
“Upon arrival, they were gently bathed, medically examined, and placed into foster homes. Lovingly named after the Philadelphia Flyers, Coots, Mich, Ers, Seels, TK, Laughts, Sanny, Hath, and Catesy’s new lives began the moment they entered our front doors,” the shelter said.
In a short time, the pups are already responding well to treatments, but will not be ready to go anywhere soon.
“It’s only been a few short days, but they are already thriving,” the shelter said. “While they will not be available for adoption for several weeks, they are playful, healthy, and full of the joy they so deserve – all thanks to the kindness of those who believe in second chances.”
