Man kills girlfriend while she’s holding her 6-month-old baby in Michigan, feds say
A Michigan man was sentenced to prison after officials said he killed his girlfriend and shot her baby.
The 39-year-old man was sentenced to 33 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder, assault with intent to murder and discharge of a firearm, according to a Nov. 8 news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan.
McClatchy News is not releasing the name of the man or the victim to protect the identity of the child involved.
On Nov. 5, 2022, the man and woman were arguing on the Isabella Reservation within Indian country, officials said. The man was upset because he thought the woman was cheating on him, according to a criminal complaint. Page 3
He then got a gun and shot the woman multiple times, killing her, officials said.
The woman was his girlfriend, according to MLive and the Morning Sun.
The woman was holding her 6-month-old baby when she was shot, according to the attorney’s office. The baby was also struck by several bullets, officials said.
The infant was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries but survived.
The woman was described as “full of love and compassion with the heart of a warrior” on a GoFundMe page.
“Most of all, she was a great mom, daughter, sister and person to everyone she knew,” the page said.
The Isabella Reservation is about a 90-mile drive northeast from Grand Rapids.
