9-year-old getting ready for school shot by person driving by, Michigan cops say
A 9-year-old girl was getting ready for school when someone drove by and fired shots into her home, Michigan police said.
One of the bullets grazed the girl in the back the morning of Oct. 30, Detroit Police Chief James White said in a video posted by WXYZ.
Officers got a notification from Shotspotter, an alert system that detects gunshots, and rushed to the area in an attempt to detain the shooter, White said. By the time they arrived, the person had fled.
The 9-year-old was taken to the hospital with a graze wound, according to police. She’s expected to fully recover, though White says the incident will impact her emotionally.
“I would imagine she’s going to be scarred for life,” he said.
While White said he believes the shooting was not a random attack, he was unable to confirm if it was specifically targeted.
“Its just very unfortunate and unnecessary (for) whomever is having a problem with someone in the home to put a child at risk who should have the peace and safety of being able to get ready for school like any child,” White said.
White said officers gathered video from the area and hope to identify and arrest the shooter.
