Customer shoots manager to death in argument over how worker made pizza, WI cops say
A Wisconsin man told police he fatally shot a store worker after he saw someone making his pizza without gloves on, court records show.
Charles J. Leggett, 38, of Milwaukee is charged with reckless homicide and use of a dangerous weapon in the Oct. 19 shooting death of 26-year-old Jamil I. Owais, court records show.
Attorney information for Leggett was not available.
According to the criminal complaint, Leggett ordered a pizza from Owais at Action Food and Liquor, then walked back to where the food was being prepared, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
Leggett told police he saw a worker making his pizza without wearing gloves and demanded Owais ask the worker to make another one, the outlet reported.
Surveillance footage from inside the store shows Leggett arguing with Owais before pulling out a gun and firing a single shot into Owais’ chest, WISN reported.
Police said another employee heard the fight and the gunshot and called 911 after finding Owais unconscious behind the counter, WDJT reported. Owais died at the scene, according to the outlet.
Mohammad Owais, owner of Action Food and Liquor, told WISN his brother Jamil was watching the store for him while he ran errands.
“To take someone’s life for no reason – that is unacceptable,” Mohammad told WITI.
Leggett is also charged with possessing a firearm as an out-of-state felon, court records show.
He is being held on a $200,000 cash bond and is due back in court for a preliminary hearing Oct. 31.
