Paramedic Michael Clarke was supposed to respond to a 911 call, but he never showed up to the ambulance to leave, a Missouri ambulance district said.

His partner went to look for him and found Clarke, 27, ”unresponsive” in one of the bedrooms at the station, officials said.

Paramedics at the St. Peters station started CPR and lifesaving measures and rushed him to the hospital, but Clarke did not survive, the rescue service said in an Oct. 14 Facebook post.

The two-year veteran’s death left paramedics grieving the “profound” loss, the station said.

“Michael embodied each of our values, but perhaps none more so than Compassion – his kindness put patients at ease and earned him respect among colleagues and community health partners,” district Chief Kelly Cope said in the post.

He joined the station in 2022 and was recognized by the St. Charles County Ambulance District for “lifesaving efforts” when a man went into cardiac arrest on Jan. 5, officials said.

St. Peters is about a 30-mile drive northwest from St. Louis.
