Cat with fading senses has ‘quirky way’ of announcing herself. Ginger needs a home

Sometimes, life gets in the way and pet owners are forced to give up their beloved animals to do what’s best for the pet. This scenario was how one cat arrived at an Ohio shelter.

Ginger, a senior cat with health issues, needs a new home so she can live out her elderly years after she came to the Medina County SPCA under heartbreaking circumstances.

“Ginger is a beautiful senior kitty looking for a place to call her own again. At 12 years young, she’s still full of love and affection, but she needs a soft landing where she can live out her golden years in comfort,” the shelter said in an Oct. 9 Facebook post.

The Medina County SPCA is in Seville.

“Ginger came back to us after her owner could no longer afford the care she needs, and made the hard decision to bring her back. It’s clear she’s missing the warmth and companionship of a home,” the post said.

Ginger is suffering from the early stages of kidney failure, the shelter says, so she’s required to be on a “special renal diet” for the rest of her life.

Because she also has poor hearing and eyesight, Ginger has come up with a unique way to make her presence known.

“Because of her fading senses, she’s developed a quirky way of letting you know she’s still there: an adorable ‘I’m still here!’ scream when she feels like she’s been left alone for too long,” the shelter said.

Ginger, a domestic shorthair, is also content just being near a human so they can brush her and give her “gentle head scratches.”

“Her former owner fondly remembers how she used to curl up on her chest, purring softly, content just to be near her human. We know she’ll find that special spot again with someone new,” the shelter said.

A calm, quiet house would be ideal for Ginger, and she is good with other pets that share her special needs.

“She’s good with other gentle pets and would do well with older animals who share her love of napping and quiet time,” the post continued. “Ginger may not be able to hear your voice or see you clearly, but she’ll always feel your love.”

Seville is about a 40-mile drive south from Cleveland.
