Dog who had lost leg sought ‘refuge in someone’s doorway.’ Then PA rescuers step in
A pup with a gentle heart hasn’t lost his spirit even after surviving a horrific injury, a shelter in Philadelphia says.
Lemon, a true survivor of a dog, remains a cheerful pup, according to the Pennsylvania SPCA, which is currently helping him heal after life-saving surgery.

“Sitting on a front step seemingly watching the world go by. That is how Lemon was found,” the shelter said in a Sept. 13 Facebook post.
“But, his story was far from sweet. Upon closer inspection, Lemon was missing his right hind leg. The bone exposed, he seemed to be seeking refuge in someone’s doorway. Perhaps he was hoping they would open the door and help.”
While Lemon’s saviour didn’t come in the form of a person behind that door, they did act quick when finding him.
“Instead, our friends at ACCT Philly (region’s animal care and control service provider) picked him up,” the post continued.
“Due to his condition, he was quickly transferred to our Philadelphia hospital to receive care. Though you couldn’t tell from his sweet demeanor and wanting to crawl into every lap he could, Lemon was in critical condition. He was transferred to Blue Pearl to receive emergent, overnight care.”
When Lemon made his way back to the shelter, he still had that same people-loving energy, but without the horrific pain.
“When he returned to our hospital the next day, he was so much brighter, and it was time for his healing to begin. He would undergo surgery to remove his remaining hind leg, and be monitored in our hospital for several more days.”
The shelter goes on to say he’s a joyful dog around 2 years old who “isn’t hard to fall in love with” and loves pets and playing around.
