Volunteers form human chain to search for missing child in Ohio lake, officials say
Community members and first responders worked together to try to locate a child who went missing in an Ohio lake.
The New Franklin Fire Department received reports of a missing child at the Portage Lakes State Park around 2:30 p.m. Aug. 30, according to a news release shared in a Facebook post.
“While it was believed that the child was not in the water, fire personnel, along with the assistance of volunteers, initiated a human chain to search and clear the swim water,” the release said.
The child, whose age and gender were not provided, was found in about 4 feet of water, officials said.
First responders tried to resuscitate the child and took them to a hospital, but the child died.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time,” officials said.
Portage Lakes State Park is 411 acres in southwest Akron. It offers outdoor recreational activities such as fishing, swimming, boating and skiing.
