A senior pup in Ohio is reeling after the only family he’s ever known was forced to give him up to a shelter after becoming homeless themselves.

Though Beast, who is also known as Beasty, might be a bit “growly” at first, he has good reason. The dog, whose exact age is unknown, was with only one family since his puppy days, but he was surrendered to the Brown County Humane Society Dog Shelter in Georgetown after the family could no longer care for him due to their own situation, an Aug. 14 Facebook post said.

“This older gentleman came to the shelter when his family became homeless. He was with them since he was a puppy,” the post said. “They told us Beasty was 17 yrs. old. Our vet estimated him about 10 yrs. old. But you never know! He is probably somewhere in between.”

Being in a new environment, of course Beasty would feel a little uneasy — but his uncomfortable demeanor had a great deal to do with health issues as well.

“Beasty was pretty aloof and even a bit growly with us at first. Until we figured out why!” the post continued.

“Beast has major fleas, and his ears were full of painful ear mites. Even worse, his teeth were so badly infected that we had to get him a dental as soon as we could get him into the vet. Beasty had 7 abscessed teeth removed and now is eating and feeling so much better! Beasty’s true personality is starting to come through and we feel he is ready for new home!”

Beasty, with his short little Corgi-like legs, is ready to start a new chapter in his life.

Georgetown is about a 40-mile drive southeast from Cincinnati.
