A dog who had a horrible start in life is now in desperate need of some love and attention at an Indiana shelter.

Demeter, a 4-year-old pit bull, terrier mix, was left in a wooded area near the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Fishers, the shelter said. Demeter had to use her strength just to stay alive.

“Demeter’s story didn’t start with love—it began with abandonment in the woods, right across from our shelter. Alone, scared, and unsure, she fought to survive,” the shelter said in an Aug. 13 Facebook post.

“But now, as the days drag on without a family, we’re seeing the light in her eyes begin to dim. Demeter is at risk of losing the hope that kept her going all this time.”

But even within the walls of the shelter — safe from outside terrors — Demeter is finding herself sullen and in need of love from a family to call her own.

“This loving girl has already overcome so much, but the shelter isn’t where she’s meant to be,” the post said. “Without the warmth of a home, she’s starting to shut down, withdrawing into herself as the days pass. Without a family to call her own, Demeter is at risk of shutting down, giving up on the hope she’s clung to for so long.”

The video shows a very devoted pup who wants nothing more than to snuggle up with a human.

Special aspects about Demeter:

  • Housebroken

  • Crate-trained

  • Affectionate

  • Good with children

“But more than anything, she dreams of you. A lap to crawl into, a hand to reach out in love, and a home where she’s showered with the affection she’s been missing,” the shelter said.

Fishers is about a 20-mile drive northeast from Indianapolis.
