A 21-year-old died after fishing gear dragged him into the water from a commercial salmon fishing boat near Bristol Bay, Alaska troopers say.

A patrol vessel received a mayday call from a fishing boat in Kvichak Bay reporting a man overboard at 12:31 p.m. Friday, July 5, troopers said in a dispatch.

Two patrol skiffs arrived as the boat crew recovered the unconscious man, who died after wildlife troopers tried to revive him for an hour, troopers said.

Investigators say Corwin Wheeler, 21, of Wisconsin, became tangled in fishing gear that pulled him overboard and under water, troopers said.

Bristol Bay is about 435 miles southwest of Anchorage.
