A grandmother in Maryland purchased scratch-off tickets for years without winning anything substantial. But then, while running errands recently, her luck changed.

She spent $20 on a Million Dollar Mega Multiplier ticket while at a convenience store in a Baltimore suburb, according to an April 17 news release from the Maryland Lottery.

“I noticed some numbers matched,” the Baltimore County resident told the Maryland Lottery. However the prize amount appeared low.

But then, a store customer revealed to her that this particular game multiplied winnings, meaning her actual prize was much larger.

The duo soon realized the winnings totaled $1 million. Ecstatic, the pair of strangers embraced each other.

“She was hugging me so tight, I was just so excited,” the grandmother told the Maryland Lottery.

After confirming her earnings with a store employee, she went home and delivered the happy news to her mother.

“We just sat there and just looked around like we were crazy,” she told the Maryland Lottery. “We were wondering what we were going to do with the money.”

They eventually decided to put some of the winnings toward a new family home and a vacation, while saving the rest.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
