UPDATE: An 89-year-old grandmother died after she and her grandson were attacked by dogs, Colorado officials said.

The woman died of her injuries on Sunday, Sept. 18 following the Wednesday attack, Emily Gedeon, the city’s communications and community engagement manager, confirmed in an email to McClatchy News.

A 12-year-old boy ran to a neighbor’s home for help after he and his 89-year-old grandmother were attacked by dogs, Colorado authorities said.

Officers found a trail of blood leading into a home and also found two dogs, who were familiar with the victims, attacking the woman in the backyard shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, according to a news release from the Golden Police Department.

“Officers challenged both dogs verbally and ultimately utilized tasers and less lethal shotguns to attempt to create distance between the victim and dogs,” according to police.

As officers tried to approach the victim, “the dogs would circle the officers,” police said, adding that “less lethal options were not effective.”

After more officers arrived, they were able to hold off the dogs and rescue the woman, police said. She was taken to paramedics waiting in the kitchen and taken to a hospital with critical injuries.

The boy, who had serious injuries, was also taken to a hospital before being airlifted to a children’s hospital, according to officials.

Police said the woman is in critical condition, while the boy is in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon.

The dogs “were captured and taken to a local veterinary hospital where they were treated and evaluated,” police said.

One dog was “euthanized due to his injuries” from the attack, while the other is being held at an animal shelter, according to police.

The incident is still under investigation, according to police.

Golden is about 15 miles northwest of Denver.
