A dog that ran out of the front door of its home and attacked a leashed dog on a walk with its owner was then fatally stabbed, California police said.

After officers responded to a call about a dog fight, they learned the owner of the leashed dog stabbed the other canine with a pocket knife while trying to separate the animals in Marina the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 6, the Marina Police Department said in a news release.

The owner’s attack caused the dog to let go of the leashed dog, police said.

The unleashed dog later died of its injuries, according to police.

The unleashed dog’s owner was cited for failing to keep the dog on a leash, as well as the inability to control the animal, the department said. No charges were mentioned for the other dog owner.

McClatchy News reached out to the Marina Police Department and did not immediately receive a response.

Marina is about 50 miles south of San Jose.
