An 8-year-old girl was killed after being flung from a flipped truck during a crash on a Louisiana highway, police said.

Mazey Guidry of Eunice was riding in the passenger seat of a 1999 Sierra GMC pickup truck without her seat belt on during the time of the crash, Louisiana State Police said in a news release.

Just before 10 a.m. July 12, the driver of the truck veered off Louisiana Highway 91 near Arpent Lane in Acadia Parish, according to the release. The truck began to spin and flipped over when it hit a drainage ditch next to the road, ejecting Guidry.

Guidry was pronounced dead by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office, according to the release.

The driver of the truck and a passenger sitting in the backseat were both wearing seat belts, police said, and sustained minor injuries during the crash.

Police said it is unknown why the truck veered off the road and the incident is under investigation.

Acadia Parish is about 25 miles west of Lafayette.
