Off-the-grid ‘art farm’ lists in Hawaii for $4 million. Take a look around

Thanks to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic that’s been going on for over two years, people have been searching for new ways to escape it all. And this property on the real estate market in Haiku, Hawaii, for $3.99 million will do just that — allow you to distance yourself from the rest of the world.

“Off-grid living is about being autonomous,” the listing on Island Sotheby’s International Realty says. “The lifestyle of off-grid living varies widely depending on your needs and desires. Some may view off-grid living as a rugged existence; the property at 796 Awalau Road will, without question, change that perception.”

The property known as an “art farm” sits on a private road and consists of four buildings, running off of 48 solar panels on 16 acres with jaw-dropping views of Haleakala National Park.

The property was curated as a passion project with the intention to prove that living off the traditional grid can be done on an upscale level,” listing agent Maeghan Pocock said to Mansion Global. “Normally people look at off-grid living as being some type of rustic experience. This property offers all the amazing comforts of the 21st century and more.”

The main house is a one-bedroom, one-bathroom open-plan home with large windows and has a “mechanical glass garage door,” Mansion Global reported.

The other structures on the compound:

  • Lofted cottage

  • Workshop “with a 110-inch projection home theater”

  • Wellness studio

  • Container swimming pool

“This one-of-a-kind property is the opportunity of a lifetime to live the Maui lifestyle in an eco-conscious, self-sustainable private retreat,” the listing says.

The “art farm” was built in 2018 by Thomas Rusnak, a former architecture professor, Dwell reported.

“When we walked the property prior to construction, we immediately fell in love with the three boulder-lined creeks and the beauty of the rolling pasture land,” Rusnak said, according to Dwell.

The listing is held by Pocock and Linda Jean Briske of Island Sotheby’s International Realty.
