Historic home once in Texaco oil family lists in Texas for $12.5 million. Have a look
A two-story architectural marvel with historical ties to the oil industry and state politics has listed for $12.5 million in Houston.
The 4-bedroom, 4.5-plus bathroom estate was built for Margaret Wray, the daughter of Texas oil tycoon Joseph Cullinan, a founder of Texaco, Mansion Global reported. Texaco, now part of the Chevron Corporation, was founded in 1902 by Cullinan, Jim Hoff, John Warne Gates and Arnold Schlaet. The Cullinan family was well known in the state’s largest city and aided in creating several institutions around the area.
“Joseph Cullinan bought a subdivision of 38 acres of land in 1916 for $30,000,” listing agent Hedley Karpas of Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty said to Mansion Global. “He then gave this piece of land, approximately 1.36 acres, to his daughter, Margaret, to build a house as a wedding gift.”
There are numerous features spread out over the elegant home’s 7,823-square-feet and on the property, including a grand reception hall, kitchen with professional grade appliances and exposed brick walls, and a reconfigured primary suite with a study and bespoke closet on the second floor, the listing says.
The house was renovated by the current owners, Mansion Global reported.
“The entire house has been redone to the studs,” Karpas said. “They reconfigured the second floor, replaced all the mechanical items and added a generator.”
This isn’t the first time the home appeared on the Houston real estate market according to The Houston Chronicle. It was previously listed for $7 million in 2020, but an additional $5 million was added after the new owners added on a new slate roof, new floor plan and redid the upstairs.
“Every single inconvenience of buying an older home has been addressed and corrected with this home, and now the house works and functions as a typical everyday modern home or new construction,” Karpas said to the Chronicle.
The listing also reported that the home was also owned by Texas Gov. Mark White, who was elected in 1982 and served one term.. He died in 2017.
