Is the Fort Worth Stockyards getting a new parking garage? Here’s what we know

It might get easier to find parking in the Stockyards.

Dallas-based Parking Systems of America filed a permit with the city to transform a surface lot at 2458 Ellis Ave. into a parking garage that would add 250 more parking spaces.

The lot holds around 50 cars and is on the southeast corner of Ellis Avenue and Northwest 25th Street. It sits on land owned by M.L. Leddy’s Handmade Boots.

The zoning allows for surface parking, so Parking Systems of America will need to get a special permit from the city to build a parking garage on the site.

It’s not clear how many floors the garage will be or how long it will take to complete.

The lot is in a special land district used by the city to preserve the look and feel of the Stockyards. According to the city’s rules for the district, any structure built on the lot would be limited to a height of 55 feet.

M.L. Leddy’s has been a proud member of the Stockyards community for 85 years, general manager Mark Dunlap said in an emailed statement to the Star Telegram.

“As the Stockyards continue to grow, the need for thoughtfully planned parking has become increasingly important; not just for visitors and businesses, but for our surrounding neighbors as well,” he said.

The garage will complement the historic nature of the Stockyards, reduce congestion and add much needed parking, Dunlap said.

“This project represents a significant long-term investment in the district’s future and reflects our continued commitment to preserving what makes the Stockyards so special, while planning responsibly for its continued growth and success,” he said.

The special permit will still need to be evaluated by the Fort Worth Zoning Commission before getting a final up or down vote by the City Council.

The earliest the Zoning Commission could take up the permit application would be at its 1 p.m. meeting on May 13 followed by a City Council vote at its 6 p.m. meeting on June 10.
