Building collapses during two-alarm fire at Fort Worth auto repair shop
An automotive repair store in southeast Fort Worth collapsed Saturday night during a two-alarm fire, officials with the Fort Worth Fire Department said.
The Fort Worth Fire Department received multiple calls around 8:30 p.m. regarding smoke and a large fire coming from a building in the 2900 block of Vaughn Boulevard, officials said.
When firefighters arrived, they found an automotive service and repair business engulfed in heavy fire that was threatening nearby businesses and residences. The crews worked to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to surrounding buildings, officials said.
Firefighters searched for anyone inside and rang a second alarm to bring more resources to “battle the blaze in below freezing temperatures,” officials said.
The automotive service business contained multiple flammable materials that fueled the fire. About 10 minutes later, crews were told to evacuate, as the main part of the 75-year-old building began to sag and collapsed.
Firefighters set up large ladder pipes, deck guns and multiple hand lines to surround the building, helping to contain the fire and protect the exposures, officials said.
The fire damaged several buildings and multiple vehicles.
“Smoke could be seen for miles throughout the City of Fort Worth, billowing into the frigid night sky,” officials said.
Firefighters battled the fire for more than two hours and remained on scene for 15 hours to ensure the fire was fully extinguished, officials said.
There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, the department said.
