4 dead, 16 injured: Bus from Fort Worth hit by stolen car on I-35 in San Antonio

At least four people were killed Thursday afternoon and more than a dozen were injured when a transport bus traveling from Fort Worth was hit by a stolen Camaro on Interstate 35 in San Antonio, officials said.

The bus, which was operated by Transportes Guerra, was on the way to the border with Mexico at Eagle Pass, according to KENS-TV.

Two bus passengers died at the scene of the crash about 2:30 p.m., San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said at a news conference Thursday. Eighteen more were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment. Two of those patients died in the hospital.

The Camaro was speeding, according to McManus. Four suspects fled from the car after the crash, including one armed with an AK-style rifle.

The Camaro hit a trailer attached to the bus, police told the Star-Telegram in an email Friday. The bus driver lost control and ended up in the path of an 18-wheeler. The semi struck the bus, which rolled over on the right side. Several passengers were ejected from the bus.

The Camaro’s occupants fled without rendering aid, according to police. The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing, and police are still looking for the suspects.

Tito Guerra, the owner of Transportes Guerra, was one of the people who died, according to several Mexican news outlets. The names of the other victims haven’t been released. The injured ranged in age from young children to senior adults, McManus said.

A representative of University Hospital in San Antonio told KENS-TV that the hospital was treating 15 patients, including two who died. At least two patients were in critical condition Thursday night, according to the hospital.

The hospital reported it had four pediatric patients, who were all in good condition.

It’s believed the majority of the passengers were from the Mexican state of Coahuila, according to reporting by Mexican news outlets.

Transportes Guerra has offices in Fort Worth and Allende, Coahuila. According to the bus company’s Facebook page, it is a tour agency that provides transportation to multiple locations in Texas, including cities on the Texas/Mexico border.

A spokesperson for the company wasn’t able to provide more information about the fatal crash when reached by phone Friday morning, but confirmed the owner’s death.

According to the bus company’s Facebook post, those with loved ones on the bus can call Transportes Guerra at any of the following numbers: 830-319-5168, 862-109-7187, or 682-758-1055.
