It’s another scorcher in DFW
It’s shaping up to be yet another day of miserably hot weather.
For now, forecasters are calling for a high of 106 degrees for the second day in a row. Sunday marked the hottest day in Dallas-Fort Worth in three years.
Although the high temperatures are not records — it was 108 on Aug. 9, 2012, and 110 on Aug. 10, 1988 — the heat is considered dangerous and people are urged to use caution when outdoors.
The city of Fort Worth said Monday it has opened cooling stations at its 20 community centers and libraries. Most are open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Salvation Army will be handing out water bottles to the homeless Monday afternoon.
And MedStar has seen an increase in heat-related calls in recent days — they’re running about the same as last August — and the agency warns residents to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
It isn’t just the heat that’s baking North Texas; it’s the lack of rain.
Dallas/Fort Worth Airport is currently tied for the sixth-driest stretch without any precipitation at 33 days. If it doesn’t rain on Monday, this streak would stand alone as the sixth-driest on record. And with the current forecast, reaching a tie for fourth at 39 days isn’t out of the question.
“It’s going to be possible,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Stalley. “We only have really slight chances of rain the next several days.”
That’s also making drought conditions creep back into parts of Texas. Currently, 72 percent of the state is without drought. That’s down from 86 percent depicted on the previous drought map. And drought will likely keep climbing when the latest monitor is released on Thursday.
But there is a slight glimmer of hope.
Although it’s going to be hot Monday and Tuesday, a weak cold front should knock high temperatures below 100 by Wednesday.
“Then we should stay in the upper 90s to around 100 for the rest of the week,” Stalley said.
