Sunday hottest day in 3 years, Monday could be worse
North Texas hit 106 degrees Sunday — a three-year record — and Monday isn’t looking any cooler, local forecasters said.
A heat advisory is in effect through Monday night as temperatures are expected to range between 104 and 107 degrees across the Metroplex, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jennifer Dunn on Sunday.
The maximum heat index values will be in the same range.
“We are just continuing to stress that tomorrow could very well be the hottest day of the year,” Dunn said.
Though it’ll be in close competition with Sunday, a high of 107 could hit sometime between 3 and 5 p.m., she said.
She called the high “dangerous and potentially deadly” so people should avoid being outside if possible.
Otherwise, she advised residents to wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, stay hydrated and find shade.
The last time North Texas hit 106 was on Aug. 14, 2012, Dunn said. The hottest temperature ever recorded for North Texas was 113 on two days, June 26 and 27 of 1980.
Also Sunday, North Texas reached 32 days without any rainfall, putting it among the longest rainless streak in the history of the area.
The record number of days without any rainfall in North Texas is 55, which was set in 2000.
Though there is a 20 percent chance of rain Tuesday, forecasters are calling for less than a 10 percent chance Wednesday and Thursday.
“It’s not an abnormal pattern because it’s summer,” said meteorologist Jason Dunn at the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth. “There’s a perception that it’s very dry because we had such a wet spring. We had all that rain and it just stopped abruptly.”
Temperatures are expected to drop to the upper 90s Tuesday.
