A 26-year-old was identified as the man who died at a Fort Worth shooting range on Dec. 30, officials said.

The man was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m. His cause of death was originally reported to be the result of a firearm malfunction, but the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled it a suicide.

Officers were dispatched to Shoot Smart at 10305 North Freeway about 8:50 p.m. They found a man with a gunshot wound to the head. He was treated by medical personnel but died at the scene, according to police.

Witnesses told officers that the gun appeared to have malfunctioned. The man was attempting to clear it when the weapon discharged, and the bullet hit him in the forehead, witnesses told police. The Homicide Unit investigated the shooting, according to police, but no foul play was suspected.

“The Shoot Smart team sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the person who passed away at the Shoot Smart Alliance location,” the company said in a statement. “The safety of our patrons and staff is paramount.”

Shoot Smart personnel were cooperating with law enforcement agencies in the investigation, according to the statement.
