Fort Worth area hospitals are among the safest in Texas, but a new report shows that some need improvement.

The fall 2024 Hospital Safety Grades were just released by the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit that measures several factors at general hospitals nationwide to help consumers choose the safest hospital to seek care.

In its recent analysis, Texas had 35.1% of its hospitals receive an A rating, a tiny decrease from its springtime ranking of 35.5%.

Texas ranked 15th overall among states with the safest hospitals.

“Despite improvements seen in this fall’s Safety Grade, significant variation in performance remains across U.S. hospitals,” President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, Leah Binder, said in a news release. “That’s why it’s so important for people to consult grades when making decisions about seeking care. All hospitals are not the same.”

How did experts determine hospital safety?

Hospitals were rated by Leapfrog according to how well they avoid infections, injuries, accidents, and medical errors that result in patient harm or death.

The safety grades were produced using roughly thirty performance measures and data that are accessible to the public.

Patients’ answers to a nationwide, standardized survey after a hospital stay were used to determine the measures’ scores.

Leapfrog analysts utilized the data to track state rankings and trends in national performance.
