A TCU fraternity has organized a flag football game to honor Wes Smith, the 21-year-old junior who was fatally shot in the West 7th district last month.

Touchdowns for Wes is scheduled for Oct. 15 at 9:30 a.m. at the TCU football practice fields. All proceeds will go to the Wes Smith Memorial Fund, a scholarship set up in Smith’s honor.

“Wes loved TCU more than anyone, and giving someone else the opportunity to attend would be what he would’ve wanted,” Kappa Sigma alumni Dylan York told the Star-Telegram in an email.

Smith, a finance major from Germantown, Tennessee, was fatally shot Sept. 1 in the 3000 block of Bledsoe Street. Officers patrolling the area heard gunshots and found Smith lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect, Matthew Purdy, was arrested nearby.

Smith was a Kappa Sigma fraternity member and walked onto the TCU football team his freshman year, according to the fundraiser.

“Wes was a genuinely great guy with a bright future ahead of him,” York said.
