An apartment fire caused by lightning injured one person, displaced 20 and damaged eight units in southwest Fort Worth early Wednesday, fire officials said.

The Fort Worth Fire Department said in a Facebook post that the fire at the apartment complex, located in the 6800 block of Bay Line Drive, was reported shortly before 5 a.m.

When crews arrived heavy fire was already showing through the roof and a second alarm was needed to get the fire under control. Officials said it took about two-and-a-half hours and approximately 70 firefighters to extinguish the fire.

Officials said one person was transported to a hospital. A spokesperson for MedStar confirmed the patient was a woman with minor injuries.

Eight apartment units were damaged in the blaze. The American Red Cross arrived to assist the 20 affected residents, according to the Facebook post.

Fire officials said reports of structure fires caused by lightning strikes started coming in around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday as thunderstorms moved through the area, but did not specify how many.
