The driver of a Camaro and a passenger died late Sunday night after the car crashed while fleeing from the scene of an illegal “takeover” street racing stunt near downtown Fort Worth, police said.

About 11 p.m., officers responded to break up the street takeover on University Drive near West 7th Street and White Settlement Road, police said in a news release.

Reports indicated that the primary vehicle involved was a red Camaro, police said.

Responding officers activated their overhead emergency lights briefly. The Camaro turned off its lights and sped off eastbound on White Settlement Road but was not being chased by officers, police said.

Shortly afterward, police received a report of a vehicle fire at 1717 White Settlement Road. Investigators believe the driver of the Camaro lost control and crashed. The car reportedly went down an embankment and flipped over.

The driver and passenger were pronounced dead on the scene by medical personnel. Their names haven’t been released.

Traffic investigation detectives and the Crime Scene Investigation Unit responded to the crash.
