Van McGraw was in disbelief when a friend told him his house was on fire.

The pair were hanging out on McGraw’s porch talking about football when the fire alarm went off.

“It happened so quick. It looked like there was some kind of accelerant,” McGraw said. “I kept smelling gasoline.”

The fire broke out around 7:40 p.m. Monday at McGraw’s home on Avenue K in southeast Fort Worth.

Crews had to act quickly to contain the fire and prevent the heat from sparking neighboring houses.

The department deployed crews on either side of the house to contain the fire while a team worked to douse it from the inside.

As of Monday evening, crews didn’t find any evidence of an accelerant, but arson investigators were unable to go inside the house due to safety concerns, battalion chief Christian Harvey said.

“The house is falling down,” Harvey said.

The crews had to be pulled back from inside the house after its structural integrity was destroyed.
