Amarillo man charged with threatening cops, racial and ethnic groups on social media
An Amarillo man is facing criminal charges after allegedly making threats against law enforcement and members of non-white racial and ethnic groups on social media, according to a Department of Justice press release.
Everett Wayne “Rhett” Copelin III was charged with making interstate threats and threatening a federal officer, according to the release.
According to the complaint, Copelin allegedly made numerous threats to kill members of law enforcement, including an Aug. 31 post to, “go ‘kamikaze’ against ‘white law enforcement,’” which was reported to the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center.
He also allegedly threatened to hang, “supporters of a Texas gubernatorial candidate,” according to the release.
Copelin was arrested Sept. 29 and made his first appearance before a federal judge Monday.
He could face up to 15-years in federal prison if convicted.
