Fort Worth Loop 820 bridge to be demolished this weekend. Here’s info on detours, traffic
The southbound Loop 820 bridge that crosses over Texas 121 will be demolished this weekend and traffic will be detoured to neighboring roadways.
“I-820 southbound will be detoured on southbound State Hwy. 121, exiting at Minnis Drive, then returning on northbound State Hwy 121 and exiting to the I-820 southbound direct connector ramp,” the City of Fort Worth said in a news release.
The old bridge is expected to be demolished Friday night, starting around 9 p.m., until early Monday morning around 6 a.m.
Commuters traveling on northbound 121 will be detoured to exit at Handley-Ederville Road then continue on northbound 121 frontage road before reentering the state highway on entrance ramp 10.
Southbound commuters will exit at Trinity Boulevard, then turn west onto Handley-Ederville Road before they can travel north back onto southbound 121 frontage road and enter onto the highway through Big Fossil Creek.
Delays are expected.
The I-820 East Loop project began around four years ago and is part of a $3.8 billion congestion relief plan started by Gov. Greg Abbott to help congested areas around the state.
Project improvements include reconstructing the existing roadway and access ramps, building additional lanes in each direction, replacing the Trinity River bridge and creating new direct connectors to and from Texas 121, the release said.
Work is progressing on the State Highway 10 bridge crossing 820, preparing for future southbound main lanes and the frontage road approaching the Highway 10 underpass, the release said. Construction continues on new retaining walls along 820 northbound main lanes between Randol Mill Road and the Trinity River, and on the 820 north to Texas 121 south direct connector.
On the 820 southbound frontage road bridge crossing 121, work continues for this weekend’s traffic shift to then begin building the new permanent main lane bridge.
