Two children are in the hospital after an apartment fire Sunday morning in east Fort Worth.

At about 6 a.m., the Fort Worth Fire Department responded to an apartment fire call in the 2300 block of Meadowbrook Gardens Drive.

Dispatchers were told that two children were still inside an upstairs unit of the burning building, according to a department spokesperson.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and found the two-story apartment complex with heavy smoke showing. As some crews worked to put out the fire, others entered the building to locate the trapped children.

The two children were found, were given medical assessment and were sent to Parkland hospital in Dallas via helicopter. Their conditions are unknown, the official said.

Firefighters found one child directly outside the front door and rushed him to awaiting medics. Firefighters then found and pulled the second child from the apartment, the fire department said in a Facebook post.

A man and two other children were able to escape the fire through the second-story window. They sustained minor injuries, firefighters said.

Smoke and water damage affected eight units and around 32 people. The Red Cross was on the scene offering assistance, the spokesperson said.

Officials have not determined what caused the fire.
