Man hit, killed by car in Fort Worth after running away from fiery crash, police say

A man was hit by a vehicle and killed on a Fort Worth highway Monday night after he was involved in a fiery wreck and got out to run as police were trying to catch up to him, the department said Tuesday morning.

The man’s identity will be released by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office pending notification of next of kin.

Officer Bradley Perez, a Fort Worth police spokesman, said though officers were following the man, “this was not a pursuit related incident.” They had begun following him because he was driving erratically, Perez said, but eventually lost the vehicle. It’s unknown why the man was driving erratically.

Officers saw the vehicle on Loop 820 at Brentwood Stair Road around 9 p.m., Perez said in the email. As they tried to catch up to it, he said, it drove out of their sight.

When they caught up with the vehicle, they found it was on fire after crashing into a pole, Perez said. The driver had run away, dashing across northbound lanes and into westbound lanes, when a vehicle struck him.

He was pronounced dead, police said.

No one had been arrested in connection with the pedestrian crash as of Tuesday morning. Perez said he couldn’t immediately say if the driver who hit the man stayed on the scene and would need to confirm with investigators.
