Bodies of Fort Worth teens recovered in river near Possum Kingdom Lake dam
The bodies of two Fort Worth teens who went missing in the Brazos River near the Possum Kingdom Lake dam on Thursday night were recovered over the weekend by authorities using aerial and submerged drones.
The body of a 19-year-old was found by deputies with the Hood County Sheriff’s Department on Saturday morning while the second body was recovered Sunday afternoon by game wardens with the Texas Parks and Wildlife and a team with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The victims have been identified as Trisharan Khatri and Hikaru Guatam, both 19-years-old, from Fort Worth, according to news reports. A ruling on their deaths is pending an autopsy by officials at the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office in Fort Worth.
A third Fort Worth teen managed to get out of the river and suffered minor injuries.
The teens, all 19-years-old from Fort Worth, had been fishing in the dam spillway at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
“One dropped his phone in the water and jumped in,” said game warden Michael Foster with Texas Parks and Wildlife in a Monday telephone interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “The first began having problems so the other two jumped in to help him.”
Foster said a valve was open on the dam and the teens were swept away by the current.
The teen who jumped in last managed to get out of the river, Foster said.
Dive teams from the North Texas area assisted in the search for the teens.
Authorities noted that the area is popular spot for fishing, but the teens had crossed into a restricted area.
“Life jackets would have made a difference in this case,” Foster said.
