Man dies in explosion at recycling facility in Fort Worth, fire department says
A 56-year-old man died following an explosion at a recycling facility in Fort Worth on Wednesday.
Jose Antonio Perez Ortiz died after the accident at Gachman Metals and Recycling Co., at 2600 Shamrock Ave., according to the Fort Worth Fire Department and Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Firefighters were dispatched to the facility on a carbon monoxide call. When crews got there, they found Perez Ortiz, who had been critically injured when industrial equipment he was working near exploded.
Crews started immediate care for Perez Ortiz and stabilized the scene, said Mike Drivdahl, spokesman for the Fort Worth Fire Department.
Perez Ortiz was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shorly after 9 a.m.
Fort Worth Fire Department bomb and arson investigators ruled the explosion accidental in a preliminary investigation.
Gachman Metals and Recycling Co. is a local business operated by Gamtex Industries, according to its website. On Thursday afternoon, a spokesperson for the company was not immediately available for comment.
