Winter weather advisory extended to 9 p.m. as light sleet and snow fall in Fort Worth area
Tarrant County motorists dealt with wet roads Wednesday, but ice and snow mostly stayed father west until the afternoon.
A mix of light rain, snow and sleet began moving north and northeast across the region, first reaching the Fort Worth area about 4 p.m. Wednesday. Accumulations are light and travel impacts are minimal, according to the National Weather Service, though forecasters still advised drivers to be cautious of slick spots developing on roadways, in particular bridges and overpasses
A winter weather advisory that includes Tarrant County has been extended until 9 p.m. Wednesday.
“We’ve had pockets of sleet in Tarrant County here and there,” meteorologist Monique Sellers at the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth said earlier on Wednesday.
Schools in the Fort Worth district were open on Wednesday on their regular schedules.
New accumulations of up to 1 inch of snow are possible in the far northwest counties of North Texas, which are under a winter storm warning, from mid-afternoon into the evening hours.
The winter storm warning is in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday for several cities west and northwest of Fort Worth. The warning includes the cities of Gorman, Ranger, Eastland, Cisco, Mineral Wells, Breckenridge, Jacksboro, Olney, Graham, Nocona and Bowie, according to the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth.
The warning means heavy sleet is expected in those cities with total snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 4 inches.
Forecasters say the winter weather will cause hazardous travel conditions in those areas.
Poor travel conditions could continue into Wednesday evening and even into early Thursday because temperatures will remain near or below freezing.
Winter weather has slammed West Texas. As much as 7 inches of snow was reported in Midland on Wednesday morning.
American Airlines issued a travel advisory for those at DFW Airport, Abilene, Lawton, Lubbock, Oklahoma City, Stillwater, Tulsa and Wichita Falls. The airline is waiving fees for customers flying in and out of DFW Airport on Wednesday if they can rebook their flight between Wednesday and Saturday.
Southwest Airlines also issued a travel alert which included Love Field in Dallas, saying travelers flying in and out of Dallas on Wednesday can rebook their flight within 14 days of the travel date without any additional charges.
On Thursday, it should be sunny and a high of 45.
