Forest Hill eighth-grader dies after heavy gate falls on him during installation attempt

A Forest Hill eighth-grader was killed Friday when a heavy gate he was helping his father install fell on him, Forest Hill police said Monday.

No other injuries were reported in the accident, which occurred Friday at a welding business in the 5200 block of High Ridge Road in Forest Hill.

The teen has been identified as Omar Torres, 14, of Forest Hill, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office website on Monday. A ruling on his death is pending an autopsy.

He was pronounced dead at 3:09 p.m. Friday at a Fort Worth hospital.

Omar was helping his father install the gate, which was made of iron and wood, said Forest Hill police Capt. Chris Stokes in a Monday telephone interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The gate was about 7 feet tall and about 20 feet wide, Forest Hill police said.

“As they were trying to install it, the gate fell on him,” Stokes said.

Omar was an eighth-grader at World Languages Institute in the Fort Worth school district. The school is a secondary school for students from the Spanish immersion and dual language enrichment programs in the district, according to the school’s website.

Counselors will be available for students and faculty members at the school, a school official said Monday.
