Fort Worth fifth-grader killed in go-kart accident at Cresson track

A funeral has been set for a 10-year-old Fort Worth girl killed last week in a Hood County go-kart accident.

A GoFundMe account also has been established for the family of Joy Wilborn, who died last week from injuries she suffered in the accident at the Motorsport Ranch in Cresson.

Joy’s funeral is at 1 p.m. Friday at Christ Chapel Bible Church in Fort Worth.

Joy was a fifth-grader at Tanglewood Elementary in Fort Worth.

Tanglewood Principal Dana McKenzie sent a letter to parents on Monday informing them of Joy’s death.

“She was a true Tanglewood Tiger and brightened everyone’s day with her kindness,” McKenzie wrote in the letter. “She will be deeply missed. Our hearts go out to her family and we continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”

McKenzie noted the family was not receiving visitors at their home and any flowers or deliveries be made to the church.

The accident occurred the evening of Dec. 27 at Motorsport Ranch, described as a country club for motoring enthusiasts, according to its website. It is about 15 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Officials with Motorsport Ranch could not be reached Tuesday.

“She wasn’t racing,” said Hood County District Attorney Ryan Sinclair in a telephone interview Tuesday with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Officials with the district attorney’s crimes against children task force are investigating. The unit investigates deaths of children in Hood County.

Joy was in a go-kart when she crashed and was thrown out, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office.

Counselors will be available on Jan. 7 for students, parents and staff members at Tanglewood, the principal said in her letter. Classes resume that day after the holiday break.

The GoFundMe account was established to help support Joy’s family, according to her school principal.

“Joy Wilborn was a kind, thoughtful and energetic 10-year-old that loved her family, friends, animals and dancing,” Luke Hejl said in the account which he established. “No amount of words could accurately describe the joy that she brother to her people.”
