A 1-year-old child was struck and killed by a vehicle shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the Crowley Recreation Center, a city official said in a news release.

Belle Davis of Crowley was struck at the Recreation Center located in the 400 block of South Oak Street, according to a statement from a city spokesman.

The child was transported to Cook Children’s Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries, spokesman Jay Hinton said.

"The incident is still under investigation by the Crowley Police Department. There will be no further information released at this time," he said.

Belle's father, Michael Davis, said his wife was there at the Recreation Center when the collision occurred, but was too shocked and shaken to relate any details to him on Wednesday.

Belle had three brothers, ages five months, 6 and the oldest is 12, Davis said. Belle was his only daughter, he said.

"She was a wonderful, happy spirit who lit up everyone's life," Davis said. "I guess God decided he needed that spirit more than me."

The police canceled a bike rodeo scheduled the same day, according to its Facebook page.

It also closed access to the Recreation Center and the public library shortly after the tragedy. The Recreation Center and library are scheduled to reopen Thursday, according to police.
