The Southwest High School marching band has high hopes going into Wednesday’s UIL Class 5A State Marching Band contest in San Antonio.
Southwest will be among four Class 5A bands from Tarrant County competing in the contest that Raider band director Jeff DeMaggd calls “the best of the best in the state of Texas.”
Preliminary rounds are Wednesday morning and the finals are that night, when the top 10 bands will march off for the state title.
Southwest will be performing a piece that includes music from the movie “The Theory of Everything” and the song “Gravity,” by Sara Bareilles.
The Southwest band has been practicing and is geared up for the trip, DeMaagd said.
“It’s ultra-creative. Ultra-competitive,” DeMaagd said.
This is the Southwest’s fourth trip to state competition; the last was in 2015 when the Raiders finished eighth.
Richland’s band director Jason Bird said this will mark seventh time they have advanced to state. They won the state title in 2003.
“The band is super-excited and humbled to represent Richland High School and DFW for the state marching contest,” Bird said.
The Richland marching band’s show title is “Danzón Sketches.”
Birdville High School’s marching band is going to state for the third time.
Aledo is going for the sixth time.
