Man facing family assault charge found dead in Fort Worth domestic shooting

A man who last month was charged with assault of a family member was found shot to death early Wednesday in what police called a domestic dispute and home invasion.

The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office identified the man as James Garrett Rawe, 37, and listed him as living at the residence where the shooting occurred.

Rawe died from a gunshot wound to his chest and his death was ruled a homicide.

A home invasion call came into police shortly before 12:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Provine Street in east Fort Worth. Rawe was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two women who also live at the house were not injured, police said. Police did not release information on the identity of the women or their relationship with the victim.

No one had been arrested as of Wednesday afternoon.

But Tarrant County criminal court records indicated Rawe has been arrested twice since April on charges of assaulting his 32-year-old girlfriend at the residence.

The first assault was reported at 12:09 a.m. April 16. Rawe was arrested, charged with assault by contact and paid a $674 fine, according to court records.

At 9 p.m. Aug. 17, patrol officers again were dispatched to Rawe’s home on an assault call. His girlfriend told police that Rawe had assaulted her and that he had walked out of the front door wearing just his boxers, a police report stated.

He was charged with assault causing bodily injury/family on Aug. 19, and he had a court date set for Nov. 6, according to court records.
