Bedford police locked down Harwood Junior High School on Tuesday after receiving a 911 call reporting a person inside the school with a gun.

Police have determined there is no safety threat at the school, the department said in an update on social media about 6 p.m.

Police received the 911 call about 4 p.m., and said the junior high school was immediately placed into lockdown.

“Officers worked to clear the school and safely escort students out of the building,” police said in a tweet.

Police said students could be picked up in the northwest parking lot.

In a message to parents, school officials said police began to dismiss students and staff one classroom at a time about 5 p.m., and all students and staff were cleared and dismissed by about 5:30.

Officers were still on the scene about 6 p.m. “Thank you for your patience during this incident so officers could safely investigate the situation,” police said.

Harwood Junior High is in the Hurst Euless Bedford school district.

“The safety and security of our students has and always will be the top priority at Harwood Junior High School,” Principal Toby Givens wrote in the message to parents. “School staff are continuing to cooperate with the Police Department’s investigation of the original report. As the investigation continues, we may not be able to share every detail of their findings or the final results. Be assured that any student who creates a threat will receive appropriate disciplinary action in line with our HEB ISD Student Code of Conduct.

“We recognize that situations like this can be extremely stressful for students,” the school’s statement said. “Please take time to listen to any concerns your student may have. If you feel your student may benefit from speaking with a school counselor, please let us know. Additional counselors will be on campus in the morning for any student who would like to speak with a counselor.”
