Keller teen receives First Tee scholarship and surprise message from President Bush
A Keller High School graduate got a surprise message last week to inform her that she’s part of the inaugural class of the First Tee College Scholarship Program.
Former President George W. Bush informed Kelly Low, along with six other recipients, that she had been selected for the program and will receive “financial assistance, ongoing mentoring and participate in professional development workshops to encourage continuous personal growth throughout college.”
“Your hard work has paid off,” Bush said in a video message. “The coming years will bring new learning, new friendships, new challenges and new opportunities. Remembering the values you have learned through the First Tee will help you for the years to come. Laura and I join your family and friends and recognize you on this special occasion, and we send our best wishes.”
Bush has served as First Tee’s honorary chair since 2009, succeeding his father, President George H.W. Bush, who served as the honorary chair since the organization’s inception in 1997.
Low has taken part in the First Tee program for five years, earning “ace” certification and volunteering as a junior coach. She’s set to attend the UT Dallas and plans to major in computer science.
“Dealing with challenges was something I used to avoid before being a part of First Tee,” Low said in a news release. “Remembering the life skills taught by First Tee, I was able to continue to pursue challenges without losing confidence. First Tee taught me to have confidence in my decisions as I go through life.”
