Tony Romo lands sponsor’s exemption for Korn Ferry event at Rangers Golf Club
Tony Romo is getting another chance to showcase his golf game.
Romo hasn’t fared well in four PGA Tour events, missing the cut each time, but may have a better chance this time around. The Dallas Cowboys former quarterback has accepted a sponsor’s exemption to compete in the PGA Tour’s minor league circuit, the Korn Ferry Tour, when it comes to town in April.
Romo will be one of the 156 players in the field for the Veritex Bank Championship at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington. The tournament runs April 16-19 with a $600,000 purse.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to play at the Veritex Bank Championship against the future PGA Tour stars,” Romo said in a statement. “Playing in the shadows of AT&T Stadium and having the tournament in my own back yard will be great. I have been working hard on my game and hope to make at little noise during the championship.”
This will be Romo’s first start on the Korn Ferry Tour. He attempted to qualify for the tour in 2018, advancing through pre-qualifying before failing to make it out of the first stage.
Despite missing the cut in all of his PGA Tour appearances, Romo is a popular draw. He ranked among the biggest storylines at the AT&T Byron Nelson last year, but missed the cut by 10 strokes with rounds of 76-74.
